PCCSF Uses the Latest in Safe, Effective Sedation
When 3 year-old Angel suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his chest and hands, Pediatric Critical Care of South Florida’s team of doctors was able to change his dressings regularly, without the excruciating pain often associated with burn care.
Utilizing the Sedara System, one of the new generation of sedation machines which delivers a fixed 50/50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, we are now able to sedate children like Angel who are undergoing short, painful procedures, in a compassionate way, without having to insert an I.V. The Sedara System decreases the time that children need to remain sedated and reduces the risks associated with intravenous techniques. It provides rapid pain relief that minimizes trauma, struggle, and the need for physical restraint.
Although nitrous oxide has been used on children and adults for decades in dental and operating room applications, this is the first time that a machine offers a mechanism to deliver gas in a manner that is safe and controlled without potential for abuse. Pediatric Critical Care of South Florida was one of the first physicians groups in Florida to use the machine for pediatric ambulatory sedation. We have been using the Sedara System for about one year and Angel was one of our first patients to be sedated with the new technology.
